Welcome to my new blog post series…..MEET GIRL BOSS. This is a blog post series that features ten of my absolute favourite girl bosses in Ireland. I have already met with five of them back in December. We sat chatting over cocktails and cupcakes in the Westbury hotel in Dublin and I am set to meet with the other five next month. I met with them to discuss life as a girl boss, the pressures, their businesses and what made them so successful. A lot of connections these days are made online but I wanted to meet face to face with these women to talk & find out their real secret to becoming a GIRL BOSS.
First up we have the beautiful Lisa Kavanagh from Cari’s Closet. Lisa has been a friend of mine for a few years now and someone who I truly admire in the fashion business here in Ireland. She has grown her passion into a very successful business and truly loves what she does. A normal lady with no airs and graces and a pleasure to meet.
So MEET GIRL BOSS…..Lisa Kavanagh 🙂
Tell us the story behind the name Cari’s Closet…
Cari’s Closet is named after my daughter Cari. It’s as simple as that 😀
What did you do before Cari’s?
I worked in social care for the HSE before I opened up Cari’s Closet. I worked in a high support unit in Portrane for six years where I worked with troubled teenagers and also before that I worked with people on the streets. I worked one on one with the teenagers to try give them the life they deserved. It was tough job but I have to say I really did love it.
Tell us about a day in the life of Lisa.
Every day is different for me however it always starts the same with my two children. I’m awake everyday from about 6am. Cari wakes early like me but I get CJ and herself ready to bring them to school. After the school run, I’m back to the office to plan out the day. I could be in the office, working on our social media, in one of our shops, at a photo-shoot, on a buying trip or meeting with people. I buy for the company so I am often in Paris, London and China to meet with suppliers. I wind down early evening to spend time with CJ and Cari after school but it’s back to work the minute they go to bed. It’s a long day but I just love working for myself.
Who’s your favourite fashion designer?
I have a couple that I really love. I love Ellie Saab for gown for evening wear but Ralph Lauren for day. I love the preppy look, blazers and shirts.
Who’s your favourite shoe designer?
I would definitely have to say Christian Louboutin for shoes. I absolutely love them.
What is the key to running a successful fashion business?
Having a great team around you and keeping ahead of the trends always. I think planning is key forecasting way ahead and knowing what will be in fashion before it hits the stores.
What is your favourite quote?
I’ve actually got two one is more personal and one is more for business.
Give one piece of advice to the woman reading this looking to start up on her own.
Follow your gut and believe in yourself. Your path is made out for you but the more you believe in yourself things will become easier for you.
Who is your role model and why?
My sister would definitely be my role model. She is 20 years older than me. I lost my parents very young and that was very hard on me. I look up to her so much and we are closer than ever. I give her advice and she gives me advice.
What’s an accomplishment that you are proudest of?
My children CJ and Cari.
What’s next for Cari’s Closet? Where to next? Any big plans for 2017?
I have big plans for Cari’s in 2017. We just opened a new company in the UK that was just set up. We have a new and exciting product that we cannot wait to share with you all. It will be revealed very soon 😉
Hope you enjoyed the first in this series. Next up is the fabulous Katie Jane Goldin from LanaiBLO and Instyler Ireland. Stay tuned for her interview coming soon 🙂
