So I’m 27….An age when you really start being concerned about your face & body. Unless I’m alone which I doubt I am. My friend had started getting cosmetic acupuncture done and told me but I never paid any attention until one day I noticed something different. I remember it was after her 8th session and I just thought her skin looked incredible and it REALLY did. I couldn’t get over it.

Cosmetic Acupuncture is fast becoming the ‘it’ beauty craze and is being hailed a natural alternative to botox with the likes of Kim Kardashian, Millie Mackintosh and supermodel, Bar Refaeli all turning to to for their skin.

So what is Cosmetic Acupuncture then?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing that has been practiced in China for over 3,000 years. It involves the insertion of fine needles into certain points on the body which have been specifically chosen, according to the diagnosis made by the practitioner. These points are at very specific locations and lie on channels of vital energy or “Qi”. Acupuncture treats quite a lot problems which I was very surprised.

  • Improves muscle tone, increases collagen production
  • Reduces/eliminates dark circles, bags under the eyes.
  • Decreases tendency towards sagging skin.
  • Reduces / eliminates double chin.
  • Eliminates fine lines, massive diminishing effect on deeper wrinkles.
  • Improves facial colour/moisturises skin.
  • Brightens eyes, reducing droopy eyelids.
  • Great for stress, anxiety, sinus problems, facial paralysis.

Of the above I suffer with at least 5 of them so getting the treatment was going to be worth it. I was curious too. I had never got it done before but I plucked the courage up and finally got the treatment done last Thursday. Needless to say I was petrified going in. I couldn’t imagine sticking 20-30 needles in my face would be a comfortable experience but I was pleasantly surprised. What I was thinking ended up being absolutely nothing like what I thought.

I got it done with a lady called Bridget who has trained in acupuncture for the last 15 years and has worked in Beaumont Hospital & currently works in Clontarf Holistic Centre. Bridget immediately calmed me and I instantly felt reassured. I actually felt such a need to write a review about it as I couldn’t get over how little pain I was in. Bridget first done a consultation with me then lay me on the bed. All needles used are CE marked, single use, sterile and disposable. She put one needle in both feet & one needle in both calves. I felt a small pinch but nothing more. This is me being 100% honest now. I wouldn’t recommend a treatment if I didn’t feel strongly about it. The very fine sterile needles are inserted at specific acupuncture points on the face to manipulate the body’s energy, boost the  circulation, helps the lymphatic system drain away toxins and stimulates production of new collagen. With pressure points stimulating the body’s healing energies and increasing blood flow, the skin automatically tightens and becomes smoother in appearance.

The treatment lasted maybe 35 minutes and before I knew it, all needles were removed and she was onto the facial massage. This was so nice and super relaxing. Overall I was impressed but obviously you don’t see results immediately. You are recommended to do a full course of treatments. You can see two of Bridget’s clients below who have reduced lines & wrinkles along with a now glowing complexion. I was that happy with the treatment that I’ve already booked in for next week and I am going to bring my mum along too. It was a really relaxing treatment, far from what I had expected it to be. My skin feels softer and definitely more even already but as for fine lines they will disappear with more treatments.

Here are two before and after photos of people getting Cosmetic Acupuncture.

Some of your questions answered…

Q. How long will it take to have an effect?

A. At most people notice some effect after the first session or two, but results become more noticeable and longer lasting around the sixth or seventh session.

Q. How much difference does it make?

A. The complete facial rejuvenation program can take five years or more off the appearance, and that’s in addition to feeling better and more relaxed and energised in yourself.

 Q. How long do the effects last?

A. With maintenance the effects can last for years.

Q. Does it hurt?

A. No, very small fine needles (more like pins) and a very gentle technique, most people find it very relaxing

Q. Can it get rid of my lines and wrinkles?

A. It can certainly lessen them.  Fine lines may disappear completely, and deeper lines will be significantly reduced.

Q. I have a skin condition, can it help?

A. Yes the program works internally as well as externally, and can help with acne, eczema, psoriasis etc.
